I saw a bottle of this Nestle Nesquik Double Chocolate Low Fat Chocolate Milk last week. While I’ve generally avoided dairy chocolate products over the past decade or so, even these non fat ones, I reasoned that I needed a temporary stoppage from soy and almond chocolate flavored beverages. So I decided to test out this chocolate skimmed cow’s milk. I was eager to try some real dairy chocolate milk for a change-up. It brings back lots of memories of grade school that chocolate flavored soy and almonds drinks just do not.
The bottle says that this chocolate milk contains 150 calories per 1-cup serving, which is approximately twice that of non fat plain white milk, which is what I typically drink at home. Vitamin A and calcium have been added to beef up the nutrition, and the fat content has been trimmed down to nothing at all, thus the fat-free designation.
However, as with most chocolate milks, you’ll find lots of added sugar in this nonfat product. So I’d avoid this while dieting, as the added sugar as well as the chocolate and artificial flavors (also included) makes this drink rather addictive in my estimation. One serving a day might be fine. But the alluring chocolate flavor will likely entice you to drink way more than that; especially if you’re a feeble-willed sugarholic like me.
Health concerns notwithstanding though, I think dairy chocolate milk tastes fuller, richer, more chocolaty, and is more fulfilling than any of the soy, rice, and almond-based chocolate drink products I’ve sampled. Indeed, no farm I know of, has come up with a nondairy chocolate drink that tastes as good as real chocolate milk. The Nesquik fat free chocolate milk flavor is deep and strong, much like those Derby Shake chocolate drinks in the glass bottles that friends and I drank in the 1970s. But it’s also significantly thicker, resulting in an unmistakably sweet dairy chocolate pleasure.
Benefits, Pros, Advantages, and Features
- It is made with real cow’s milk and is a grade A, homogenized milk product. It displays the “Real” dairy symbol.
- This drink keeps for roughly three weeks from the date of purchase in the refrigerator. That’s a decent shelf for a dairy milk product.
- Contains no high fructose corn syrup. It’s gluten free. It’s 99% caffeine free.
- At roughly $1.80 per pint bottle at my local convenience store, Nesquik brand fat-free chocolate milk is a decent buy.
- This chocolate milk has zero grams of saturated fat, less than 5 MG of cholesterol, and roughly 1 gram of dietary fiber per cup.
- The color of this beverage is a dark and deep brown, much like Nestle’s milk chocolate. It matches other medium-strength chocolate milks.
- The packaging protects the product from light, which can degrade the flavor as well as neutralize some nutrition. While the plastic bottle itself is clear, the outer label is opaque, blocking all but the most trivial amounts of light from touching the entrapped liquid.
- Indeed, there’s little compromising on taste, color, or texture in this Nestle fat free milk product. No weak chocolate flavor here to complain about.
- This product is available at most grocery stores big and small.
Disadvantages, Cons, Problems, and Concerns
- It contain 28 grams of sugar per serving. To be fair however, nearly half of this sugar occurs naturally in the milk, and was thus, not added. Still though, do be careful not to indulge too much at one time.
- It must always be kept refrigerated. Unlike the soy and almond products, this dairy beverage should not be allowed to warm to room temperature.
- Due to the sugar content, in my view, it’s easy to consume excess calories via this product. This product’s sweet chocolaty flavor tests one’s resolve to consume in moderation thus. It’s got a delicious, addictive, mild chocolate flavor.
- Diabetics should monitor their blood sugar readings meticulously when consuming this milk, as it contains significant amounts of high GI sugar.
- To produce a lower glycemic index product, thereby suiting it more for diabetics, Nestle might use pure agave nectar or Splenda instead of the sugar for sweetening.

Product Rating
This non fat chocolate milk is a decent value. I like it well enough. This real cow’s milk is a nice diversion from that entirely plant based stuff, and a pleasant vacation return to the truly wonderful chocolaty tastes of days gone by. It’s not quite as naturally creamy as the low-fat varieties. That is, it definitely tastes like it’s fat free; not as good-tasting as the less healthy, fat-laden chocolate beverages. So I’d rate it at 88 out of 100.
