DelGrosso Meat Flavored Pasta Sauce is quite the versatile spaghetti sauce, and as such, found all sorts of Italian recipes for spaghetti, lasagna, manicotti, and so on. I’ve applied it to my pasta dishes for decades, and immensely enjoy the subtle yet distinctive flavor that quietly shouts, “DelGrosso!” Here are my impressions of this wonderful-tasting pasta sauce that’s virtually irreplaceable in my kitchen.
Benefits, Advantages, Pros, and Features
- The mild yet unmistakable flavor of this DelGrosso’s meat flavored spaghetti sauce is awesome in an ironic way! While it’s a rather thin sauce, DelGrosso’s pasta sauce offers an abundance of Italian spices without overdoing it.
- This spaghetti sauce is virtually non perishable. I’ve kept unopened bottles around for two years without noticeable degradation of taste or change in color.
- Just about any grocery store in the central Pennsylvania region carries DelGrosso’s meaty spaghetti sauce. So it’s insanely easy to find by PA residents. I’ve even seen it in Pittsburgh stores.
- This spaghetti sauce is on the very mild side of spicy; I’ve tasted other much spicier sauces. This makes it acceptable to wide variety of guests at the meal table.
- DelGrosso meaty spaghetti sauce contains 3 grams of fiber. It’s always nice to see food with fiber; particularly since fiber can be so hard to find in healthful quantities in many processed foods.
- This sauce is manufactured just a few miles down the road from me. I like buying locally if possible, and this spaghetti sauce, though locally made, tastes every bit as good as the big nationally-marketed sauces.
- They provide glass-jar packaging for this product, which is great for keeping chemicals in the packaging from leeching into the food, but perhaps not so great for keeping bright light from weakening the already-mild flavor. So keep your sauce in a cool and dark place for maximum flavor retention.
- I recently paid roughly $5.50 for the 24-ounce jar, which provides enough sauce to flavor 12-ounces of pasta (I like lots of spaghetti sauce on my spaghetti). The price seems reasonable in that one jar of this product provides enough flavor for two meals. And, at $2.75 per meal plus a buck or so for the pasta, this product is affordable.
Disadvantages, Cons, Problems, Drawbacks, and Concerns
- This pasta sauce contains significant amounts of sodium, at 500 MG per 1/2 cup serving. This means that us folks over the age of 51 should not eat more than a cup and a half in a day; lest we exceed the recommended intake sodium amount of 1500 MG per day for our age group. I hope DelGrosso makes a low-sodium version of this same meat sauce product. I’ll look for one and report on it should I find it.
- DelGrosso Meat Flavored spaghetti sauce contains added sugar and salt. Again, they’d do well to take all added salt and sugar out. If I want these ingredients in my pasta sauce, I prefer the option to add it myself.
- DelGrosso’s meat flavored pasta sauce must be refrigerated after opening.
- DelGrosso Meat Flavored Pasta Sauce has 600 MG of sodium per tablespoon, which can play havoc in the bodies of those who must control their blood pressure. Perhaps there’s a low-sodium version of this hot sauce.

To bring this review to a close then, DelGrosso Meat Flavored Pasta Sauce is an amateur cook’s dream for spicing up spaghetti with the taste of an expert hand, that people will generally recognize and like. DelGrosso’s unique blend of tomatoes, olive oil, and spices has been so popular due to the ubiquity of many types of pasta over the years. In moderation, it’s a healthy spaghetti sauce, as the sugar contant is not terribly high. I love it thus, and would recommend it be included any any active cook’s kitchen. I’d therefore rate this spaghetti sauce at 94 out of 100.

Look for DelGrosso spaghetti sauce in the clear glass jar (that displays the orange-red sauce inside, with the black, red, and white label, along with the black cap, at any major Pennsylvania grocery store or at Walmart super centers. This is a regiional product, distributed from central PA.
