Lately, I’ve purchased Horizon Organic Fat Free Milk with DHA Omega-3, which the label claims, is a grade A skim milk product and is USDA certified organic. I’ve consumed hundreds of gallons of name brand skim milk products through the years, and thus, have a good idea of what tasty fat free milk should taste like. I find this organic skim milk equivalent to Stonyfield and and other name brand organic fat free milk products in terms of cost and taste. But, the Horizon flavor I do not like as much as the Stonyfield brand when drinking right from a glass. However, on my cereal, which is the place where I consume by far the most organic skim milk, the Horizon nonfat milk brand is every bit as satisfying as Stonyfield.
Benefits, Pros, Features, and Advantages
- Less plastic. Horizon organic milk comes in a carton; not a plastic bottle, and I believe that its taste therefore, is far less impacted by the leeching plastic compounds from the bottle that get into the milk, that often destroy the milk’s gently sweet yet mild flavor.At roughly $3.94 per half-gallon carton, this fat free milk is priced on par with other name brand organic milk products in the stores I’ve checked out.
- Added vitamins and omega-3s. This organic product contains several additives; including vitamins A, C, D3, E, and algal oil (for the small amount of omega-3 heart-healthy fat).
- Nonfat milk has fewer calories. Contains 80 calories per one-cup serving; significantly less calories than whole milk, and it has virtually no fat or cholesterol. This puts this organic skim milk right in line with other fat free milk products.
- Longer shelf life. Keeps for over a month in the refrigerator so long as it’s kept cold. So it’s a wonderful item to stock pile.
- Light yet creamy flavor. Mild taste. Yet it hints of a slight creamy taste, but no more so than other skim milk brands I’ve sampled.
- Fairly easily procured. Horizon milk products are available at health food and bigger grocery stores like Walmart, Hometown Market, and Giant Eagle Market District here in PA.
- Good source of good fats. Normally, we avoid organic products with additives, as this would seem to negate many of the benefits of buying organic dairy products. However, adding the DHA Omega-3 fatty acids as Horizon has done makes it much easier to incorporate this small amount of fat into my daily diet, which they say supports heart, brain, and eye health. Presumably it does this by helping to prevent or delay clogging up of the blood vessels that feed those organs with artery-hardening plaques.
Disadvantages, Cons, Problems, and Concerns
- My usual complaint about most any organic nonfat milk product, and organic food products in general, is that they typically cost quite a bit more than their non-organic counterparts. So expect to pay approximately twice the amount per half-gallon that an equal amount of non organic skim milk would set you back. However, I don’t mind paying extra for organics very much, as this nonfat milk tastes so much better than the non organic brands in my opinion, and is likely healthier as well.
Rating For Horizon Organic DHA Skim Milk
In sum then, I indeed find Horizon Fat Free Organic Skim Milk a reasonably good value when, in addition to cost, you also factor in its nice flavor as well as its potential long-term health benefits. I enjoy it, and would thus, rate it at 91 out of 100.
