Generally, I like the entire line of Frank’s RedHot cayenne pepper-flavored hot sauce products, and Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Wings Sauce is no exception. Currently, I’m enjoying it on a couple of Gorton’s fish sandwich fillets, and it’s quite good. Indeed, you need not apply wing sauce exclusively to hot wings to get that original Buffalo chicken wing flavor. I apply this after baking; not before, since I like to have a saucy coating on the surface of the fillets. I do not like having the wing sauce completely absorb into the breading, which it would do if applied prior to baking.
I’ve tested this RedHot wing sauce on Mrs. Paul’s and Van de Kamp’s fish fillets, with deliciously flavorful outcomes. Frank’s Buffalo Wing Sauce is a medium heat grade Buffalo sauce that’s hot enough to kick but not so hot that it takes your breath away. It’s still deserving of its reputation as a formidable hot sauce however.
Benefits, Pros, Advantages, and Features
- Frank’s is THE original Buffalo wing sauce. The label says that ths product was the key in the first Buffalo wings that were created during 1964 at Buffalo, New York. So, no wonder it tastes authentic.
- The notably warm flavor enhances the taste of fish- and poultry-based entrees without numbing the tongue excessively. Frank’s effectively disguises the overpowering fishy taste of some sea foods, if that’s what you wish.
- Frank’s is a typical-thickness wing sauce, which makes it thicker than most red pepper sauces dubbed as hot sauces. They achieve this level of thickness with xanthan gum and canola oil. In terms of thickness, this sauce resembles half and half or light maple syrup.
- There’s a hint of butter flavor, which makes this Buffalo wing sauce more than just another hot sauce.
- The best-used-by date is a year and three quarters out from the purchase date. So Frank’s wing sauce will keep a lenghty interval in your food cupboard.
- Upon opening, this product requires no refrigeration. Just store it in a cool and dark place for maximum original-flavor preservation.
- Many hot sauces designated as “wing sauces” have more calories per serving than those dubbed as “hot sauces,” though they taste virtually identical to each other. However, Frank’s RedHot wing sauce contains neither calories nor fat. This compares favorably to Louisiana Brand Origina Wing Sauce, which has ten calories per tablespoon, and one gram of fat.
- This sauce is more mild than hot, making it acceptable to a broad range of guests at the party room table even if applied liberally. Frank’s has enough heat and butter flavor that it pleases the true wing buffs, but also thrills the novice chicken wing lovers.
- The featured glass bottle preserves the when-packaged flavor better than some plastic bottles.
- They added no sugar to Frank’s Buffalo wing sauce. The fat they added, in the added canola oil, appears too low to register on the nutrition facts label.
- A basic recipe for Buffalo chicken wings made with this sauce appears on the label. Nice touch for those of us who make wings infrequently.
- As a marinade, this sauce is pretty good. Just make sure you account for the thickness of this product by poking larger holes in your meat prior to marinading.
- Frank’s RedHot products are typically easy to find in just about all larger grocery outlets, and most mid-sized stores and shops.
Disadvantages, Cons, Problems, and Concerns
- The sodium in this product seems high at 460 milligrams per serving.
- The heat level is a bit mild for my taste, as there’s hardly any “burn” at all.
- As with most other wing sauces, you must remember to shake this product well before pouring it on your wings. This is no big deal however.

Product Rating
All-in-all, Frank’s medium-heat-flavored Buffalo wing sauce is a rushed cook’s friend for quickly achieving that original authentic Buffalo wing taste in his or her own chicken wings at home. Used conservatively, this wing sauce a reasonably healthy flavoring that does not go overboard with the red pepper kick. So I’d recommend that this Buffalo hot sauce be included in any busy cook’s kitchen. I’d rate thi at 93 out of 100.
