Reese’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups in the 1.5-ounce size from Hershey’s candy company, taste notably different than the traditional cups coated in milk chocolate. But Reese’s Dark cups are quite chocolaty and thus, good-tasting. Though my hips hate any flavor of Reese’s peanut butter cups, my mouth adores them. This fairly new signature duo of dark chocolate and peanut butter is an innovative new twist on such a classic candy combination. Reese’s stands alone at the top when it comes to the best peanut butter and chocolate confections.
Haven’t run across Reese’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups in a king, miniature, or mini size as of yet. But given the great number of dark chocolate fans out there, I expect this Reese’s variation to become wildly successful, with those other sizes to follow.
These regular-sized cups sport roughly the same chocolate-to-peanut-butter ratio as the regular-sized milk chocolate and white chocolate cups. This implies a highly nutty taste from all that peanut butter inside. Indeed, if you like both chocolate and peanut butter flavors in roughly equal strength, the this medium-sized peanut butter and dark chocolate cup will suit you just fine.
Benefits, Pros, Advantages, and Features
- Reese’s is a tried-and-true name in the peanut butter cup making and marketing field, since every other brand has yet to create for itself the long-lived Reese’s acclaim. So, even these newer Reese’s Dark cups can be found in about any candy or grocery store.
- Though some candies have begun using trans fats in the form of partially hydrogenated oils in their recipes, Reese’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups contain none.
- If I ever do get tired of eating this candy, as sometimes does happen during the holiday season, all it takes is a two-week break from it. Then, again, I start to long for that dark chocolaty peanut butter sensation. I never get sick of Reese’s peanut butter cups of any type.
- Though this dark chocolate variation on the classic Reese’s peanut butter cups is indeed a candy, real peanut butter occupies roughly half their total weight, which adds a measure of natural nutrition, unlike other candies, which offer little of this. While empty calories abound in this treat, some essential vitamins and protein exist, which save this candy from the realms of the completely bad-for-you foods.
- In recent years, Reese’s made the wrappers for this candy air-tight. The result is that the new wrapping better contains the peanut butter aroma, and protects this candy from odors outside contaminating its fresh but delicate flavor. With this improved wrapper, Reese’s peanut butter dark chocolate cups nowadays stay fresh and for many months, and never acquire the taste other nearby smelly foods.
- As delicious as these dark chocolate peanut butter candies are, it’s astonishing to find much besides sugar and additives inside. Yet each dark chocolate cup has roughly 1 gram of dietary fiber and 65 MG of sodium per cup.
- It’s impressive that Reese’s has been able to retain the same flavor for nearly nine decades. I suppose that means that this is a tried-and-true recipe, like Pepsi Cola, that generations of candy lovers have liked, including mine.
Disadvantages
- Each cup has 3 grams of saturated fat. Thus, as is true of most candies, limited eating is essential to enjoyment without weight gain and other health difficulties that come from eating large quantities of sugar and fat.
- At 105 calories per normal-sized dark chocolate cup, these peanut butter cups, due to their good taste, can really plump the waist because putting them away before they’re all gone can be quite challenging. I wish they made a sugar-free version of this dark chocolate candy.
- The 2-cup packs cost approximately $1 each. Not objectionable by today’s pricing standards. But when my voice was high, you could get them for a dime.
- This dark chocolate candy is quite heat-sensitive. Leaving a chocolaty mess on the fingers when eaten will surely happen when storage temperatures for this candy hover above eighty degrees or so. However, if fixing this chocolate-softening problem means adding more saturated fats, then I’d rather that Reese’s leave the formula unchanged.
Product Rating
These peanut butter cups taste excellent when frozen, even if a little hard to bite into. Actually, I’d recommend this dark chocolate version either warm or cold because of their satisfying and addictive flavor. But since these cups have so much fat and added sugar, I’ll temper my rating, and rate this candy at 90 out of 100. The dark chocolate adds a bit more healthful compounds than what is found in the milk chocolate original cups.
Where To Buy Reese’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups
Look for this sweet, chocolaty, and nutty treat at most any candy shop or big or little grocery store or convenience-oriented retailer. You’ll recognize them in the bright orange wrapper with the yellow and brown lettering, with dark brown ends, to match the dark chocolate inside.
